Chapter

Fifteen

Ace dropped Cassie back at the hotel. She had said she needed to work through some of her emails and return a few calls before dinnertime. He almost asked if she was going to call her parents but then decided not to. They’d had such a wonderful afternoon, and he didn’t want to ruin it by bringing up difficult subjects. The specter of her family was still looming large, an issue that she was going to have to deal with probably more than once.

The bell over the door announced that he was a new customer at the floral shop in their little beach town. He’d known the family that owned this place for years. Janie’s mother and grandmother had also run the shop at one time.

“Ace,” Janie exclaimed, a huge smile on her face. “What can I do for you today? And can I say it’s been forever since I’ve seen you. They must be keeping you chained to your desk.”

“They are,” he agreed. “But every now and then I escape and have some fun before they can find me. How are you?”

“Busy as all get out. Candace’s wedding is next spring, and she and I have been busy working on her wedding dress. What did I get into when I agreed to help her make it? I must have been off my rocker. I will say, though, that it’s turning out even better than I expected it to. I hope you and your family will be able to come to the wedding. It just wouldn’t be the same without the Anderson family there.”

“It would probably be calmer and quieter,” Ace laughed. “The Andersons aren’t exactly known for being seen and not heard.”

“Oh, that was your granddaddy. He was a wild one. You boys are pretty tame compared to some of the stories I heard about him. And Henry seems like a good boy, too. I saw him the other day at the cafe and I couldn’t believe how much he’s grown. He graduates soon, doesn’t he?”

“He does and he won’t let me forget it. He’s always telling me what a grown-up he is. I keep telling him that being an adult isn’t all that much fun, but I don’t think he believes me.”

“He’ll learn.” Janie rested her palms on the counter between them. “Now what can I do for you today? Getting some flowers for your mama? Isn’t it her birthday in a few weeks?”

It was and flowers were an excellent idea.

“I don’t know how you remember everyone’s birthday in this town.”

“It’s a gift. Some people knit. Some people juggle. I remember birthdays.”

“Yes, I would like to send Mom some flowers but that’s not actually why I’m here. I need to ask you a question about some flowers that were delivered to the resort a few days ago. A bouquet for Cassandra Abbott. Do you remember it?”

Janie’s brows shot up. “Remember it? How could I forget? The guy that ordered it flashed a wad of hundreds big enough to choke a horse.
